Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A tale of an inner city drug dealer who turns away from crime to pursue his passion, rap music.

The Quartile Take

Get Rich or Die Tryin' follows a well-worn semi-autobiographical rise-from-the-streets narrative that offers little the genre hasn't seen before. 50 Cent's screen debut is serviceable but uneven — he carries charisma but limited dramatic range, while supporting players like Terrence Howard elevate the material. Jim Sheridan brings competent visual craftsmanship to the gritty urban setting but nothing cinematically distinctive. The plot is formulaic — drug trade, violence, redemption through music — hitting familiar beats without subverting or deepening them. The ending feels rushed and overly tidy given the harsh world depicted throughout.
