After the brutal death of a friend, a group of friends find themselves in possession of a video-game called "Stay Alive," a blood-curdling true story of a 17th century noblewoman known as the Blood Countess. After playing the game when they know they shouldn't, however, the friends realize that once they die in the game — they die for real!
Stay Alive is a mid-2000s horror novelty that blends video game culture with supernatural horror, drawing on the real historical figure of Elizabeth Báthory (the Blood Countess) for its antagonist. The premise is genuinely distinctive for its era and stands out from generic slasher fare, earning modest novelty points. However, the plot is formulaic once the central gimmick is established — characters die in predictable order, motivations are thin, and the screenplay offers little surprise. Acting is serviceable at best, with a young cast (including Frankie Muniz and Sophia Bush) delivering mostly flat performances constrained by weak material. Cinematography has some effective atmospheric moments and the game sequences show visual ambition, though execution is uneven throughout. The ending resolves too neatly and fails to capitalize on the dread built earlier, leaving little lasting impact. Overall a curiosity piece that squanders an interesting concept.
