The Strangers: Chapter 1 (2024)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motives.

The Quartile Take

A near scene-for-scene reboot of the 2008 original that adds little to justify its existence. The plot is skeletal and derivative even by slasher standards, leaning hard on genre clichés (car breakdown, remote cabin, masked killers with no motive). Acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with the leads failing to elevate thin characterization. Cinematography is the one relative strength, offering some atmospheric wide shots and moody forest dread that modernizes the look slightly. Novelty is essentially zero — this is a formulaic remake of an already-spare film, offering no new ideas, angles, or voice. The ending is deliberately open-ended as a franchise setup but feels unsatisfying and abrupt rather than provocatively ambiguous.
