Gorillas in the Mist (1988)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

The story of Dian Fossey, a scientist who came to Africa to study the vanishing mountain gorillas, and later fought to protect them.

The Quartile Take

Gorillas in the Mist is elevated primarily by Sigourney Weaver's commanding, Oscar-nominated performance as Dian Fossey, capturing both her passionate dedication and increasingly dangerous obsession. The cinematography is genuinely exceptional — the lush Rwandan mountain landscapes and intimate gorilla footage create a sense of immersive authenticity rarely achieved in biographical dramas. The plot is solid but follows a fairly conventional biopic arc: idealistic outsider, gradual transformation, tragic conclusion. Novelty is moderate; the subject matter is distinctive but the storytelling approach is fairly traditional for the era's prestige biopics. The ending, while emotionally resonant and historically faithful, arrives somewhat abruptly and leaves the resolution of Fossey's murder frustratingly open, which is true to life but mildly unsatisfying dramatically.
