A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Freddy Krueger returns once again to terrorize the dreams of the remaining Dream Warriors, as well as those of a young woman who may be able to defeat him for good.

The Quartile Take

A largely formulaic continuation of the Nightmare series, Dream Master recycles the established Freddy formula with diminishing returns. The plot is thin and predictable, serving mainly as connective tissue between increasingly elaborate kill sequences. Acting is passable at best, with the young cast delivering serviceable but unremarkable performances. Cinematography is a genuine bright spot — director Renny Harlin brings some visual flair and the dream sequences feature inventive, stylish set design and lighting that elevate the material above typical slasher fare. Novelty is low as it leans heavily on established franchise conventions without meaningfully expanding them, and the ending resolves without much impact or ingenuity. A watchable but mid-tier entry in the series.
