During the Vietnam War, a soldier finds himself the outsider of his own squad when they unnecessarily kidnap a female villager.
Brian De Palma's harrowing Vietnam War drama is anchored by exceptional performances from Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn, whose moral confrontation gives the film real weight. The plot, based on a true story, is grimly effective but fairly linear. Cinematography is competent with some strong jungle sequences without reaching the heights of Apocalypse Now or The Deer Hunter. The film covers familiar Vietnam War moral territory, earning a solid but not exceptional novelty score. The ending provides closure but feels slightly conventional given the intensity of what preceded it.
