Friday the 13th Part VII - The New Blood (1988)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Tina Shepard, a telekinetic teenage girl, accidentally unchains Jason from his watery grave, allowing him to go on another killing spree in the area.

The Quartile Take

Friday the 13th Part VII attempts something genuinely different by introducing telekinesis into the formula, creating a quasi-superhero showdown between Tina and Jason that gives the film a distinctive identity among the series entries. The cinematography is competent for the genre, with some atmospheric lakeside shots and reasonably effective kills (heavily cut by the MPAA). However, the plot mechanics are thin even by slasher standards, with paper-thin characters serving purely as fodder. Acting is serviceable at best, with Lar Park Lincoln giving a committed performance as Tina but surrounded by weak support. The ending's telekinetic showdown is memorable but narratively incoherent. The telekinesis gimmick earns it above-average novelty within the franchise, but the execution remains formulaic in structure.
