Hellhole (2022)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

In a monastery cut off from the world, the monks run a clinic for the possessed. One day, a young policeman Marek comes to the convent. Posing as a clergyman, he penetrates monastic life and tries to explain the recent, mysterious disappearance of several tormented inmates. It turns out, however, that there is no way out of the monastery.

The Quartile Take

Hellhole is a Polish folk-horror mystery that blends police procedural infiltration with monastic dread and possession lore. Its atmospheric monastery setting and slow-burn tension give it a distinct Central European flavor that lifts it above generic exorcism fare. The plot is engaging in setup but loses coherence as it builds toward its climax, and the ending feels rushed and somewhat unsatisfying for the dread it accumulates. Acting is competent and grounded, with the lead carrying the procedural tension credibly. Cinematography leans into murky, candlelit interiors effectively. Novelty is moderate — the premise feels fresh in its Polish Catholic context but draws on familiar possession and cult-mystery tropes without fully transcending them.
