Mindcage (2022)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Detectives Jake Doyle and Mary Kelly seek the help of an incarcerated serial killer named The Artist when a copycat killer strikes. While Mary searches for clues in The Artist's brilliant but twisted psyche, she and Jake are lured into a diabolical game of cat and mouse, racing against time to stay one step ahead of The Artist and his copycat.

The Quartile Take

Mindcage is a fairly generic entry in the serial-killer-consultant thriller subgenre, owing obvious debts to Silence of the Lambs and Copycat without bringing much new to the table. The plot mechanics are familiar and predictable, the twists telegraphed early, and the cat-and-mouse dynamic feels recycled. Acting from Martin Lawrence and John Malkovich is serviceable but underutilized given the material, with Malkovich's eccentric charisma being the most watchable element. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable — standard procedural visual language with little distinctive flair. Novelty is low as the film treads well-worn ground without a unique voice or singular craft to distinguish it. The ending resolves in a perfunctory manner without delivering meaningful payoff or surprise, consistent with the film's overall by-the-numbers execution.
