Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, returns home to find his father murdered and his mother now marrying the murderer... his uncle. Meanwhile, war is brewing.
Kenneth Branagh's epic four-hour uncut Hamlet is a towering cinematic achievement. The plot faithfully preserves every scene of Shakespeare's full text, giving the narrative unmatched depth and complexity. The acting is exceptional across the board — Branagh's own commanding Hamlet anchors a stellar ensemble including Derek Jacobi, Kate Winslet, and Julie Christie. The cinematography by Alex Thomson is visually sumptuous, using Blenheim Palace to stunning effect with lavish widescreen compositions. The ending, staging the full bloody catastrophe of the final act with operatic grandeur, is devastating and earned. Novelty is strong but slightly tempered — it is still fundamentally a faithful Shakespeare adaptation, distinguished more by its completeness and scale than radical reinvention.
