A group of 12 teenagers from various backgrounds enroll at the American Ballet Academy in New York to make it as ballet dancers and each one deals with the problems and stress of training and getting ahead in the world of dance.
Center Stage is a beloved but modest dance drama that hits familiar beats of the underdog dancer narrative. The plot follows well-worn genre conventions with stock characters and predictable arcs. Acting is serviceable but uneven, with professional dancers cast over trained actors. Cinematography is genuinely strong in the dance sequences, capturing the physicality and energy of ballet with kinetic camerawork. Novelty is low as it recycles the classic 'arts school competition' formula without significant reinvention. The ending ballet showcase is crowd-pleasing and emotionally satisfying, elevating the finale above the formulaic setup.
