The Quartile Take

The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of Eastwood's finest Westerns, elevated primarily by a commanding lead performance from Eastwood himself and a strong supporting cast including Chief Dan George. The plot follows a familiar revenge-and-redemption arc but is enriched by its episodic structure and thematic depth around community and healing. Cinematography is competent and scenic but not especially distinguished for the era. Novelty is moderate — it subverts the lone-gunman archetype by building a surrogate family, and its sympathetic treatment of Native Americans was relatively progressive for 1976, but it works within well-worn Western conventions. The ending resolves satisfyingly if somewhat quietly, offering closure without fireworks.
