A down-on-his-luck coach is hired to prepare a team of the best American dancers for an international tournament that attracts all the best crews from around the world, but the Americans haven't won in fifteen years.
Battle of the Year is a formulaic sports-underdog drama transplanted into the breakdancing world. The plot follows a well-worn template with little surprise, and the acting is serviceable at best, with Josh Holloway doing his best but hampered by thin characterization. The cinematography and dance sequences are competently shot with some energy, giving it a slight edge visually. However, the film offers little novelty beyond its b-boy setting, recycling familiar beats from films like Bring It On and You Got Served without adding much distinctiveness. The ending resolves predictably with minimal emotional payoff.
