Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating
A teenager journeys through a series of foster homes after her mother goes to prison for committing a crime of passion.
White Oleander is anchored by a powerhouse Michelle Pfeiffer performance as the manipulative, narcissistic mother Ingrid, with strong support from Robin Wright and Renée Zellweger. The episodic structure following Astrid through foster homes allows for rich character studies but can feel uneven and meandering as a whole. The cinematography is competent but unremarkable for the era. The film adapts Janet Fitch's acclaimed novel faithfully but the episodic journey loses some dramatic momentum, and the ending feels somewhat inconclusive and unsatisfying as a resolution to the mother-daughter dynamic at its core. The concept of a daughter defining herself against a domineering mother is well-trodden territory, though the specific milieu and Pfeiffer's magnetic portrayal give it distinction.
