Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a shy research physician, uses an experimental drug to "awaken" the catatonic victims of a rare disease. Leonard is the first patient to receive the controversial treatment. His awakening, filled with awe and enthusiasm, proves a rebirth for Sayer too, as the exuberant patient reveals life's simple but unutterably sweet pleasures to the introverted doctor.
Awakenings is anchored by two extraordinary performances from Robin Williams and Robert De Niro, whose chemistry and emotional range elevate the material well above the norm — Acting is a genuine standout. The true story of L-DOPA trials with post-encephalitic patients gives the plot real pathos and a bittersweet arc, though the narrative follows a fairly conventional medical-drama structure. Cinematography is competent and warm but unremarkable. The film is distinctive in its tone — tender rather than manipulative — but the genre trappings are familiar enough to keep Novelty moderate. The ending is genuinely moving and honest in not offering false hope, but it is also the kind of dignified, tearful Hollywood conclusion audiences expect from this type of drama.
