Speak No Evil (2024)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

When an American family is invited to spend the weekend at the idyllic country estate of a charming British family they befriended on vacation, what begins as a dream holiday soon warps into a snarled psychological nightmare.

The Quartile Take

This 2024 English-language remake of the 2022 Danish film carries over the core premise almost entirely intact — a family manipulated by predatory hosts in an idyllic countryside setting. As a remake, its Novelty is inherently limited; the disturbing escalation and hospitality-gone-wrong mechanics were already executed in the original. James McAvoy's menacing, chameleonic performance as the host is a genuine standout, lifting the Acting category well above average and arguably surpassing the original's lead. Cinematography is competent and atmospheric but unremarkable. The plot functions effectively as a psychological horror engine but offers little structural surprise for those familiar with the source material. The ending softens slightly compared to the original's bleaker conclusion, landing as serviceable rather than devastating — a mild disappointment given the genre.
