Americans Amy, Stacy, Jeff and Eric look for fun during a sunny holiday in Mexico, but they get much more than that after visiting an archaeological dig in the jungle.
The Ruins earns its distinctiveness through its genuinely unusual antagonist — carnivorous, sentient vines that mimic sounds and invade the body — which sets it apart from standard slasher or creature horror. The film commits fully to its premise with real tension and body-horror escalation. Acting is competent but unremarkable; the four leads are believable if not memorable. Cinematography is functional, making good use of the sun-drenched jungle setting to create unease rather than darkness. The plot is lean and focused, serving the survival horror premise well without much subtext or complexity. The ending leans into bleak hopelessness, which fits the tone but doesn't quite land with full impact. Overall a solid, underrated entry in survival horror elevated by its singular creature concept.
