When a plane crash claims the lives of members of the Marshall University football team and some of its fans, the team's new coach and his surviving players try to keep the football program alive.
We Are Marshall is a competent and emotionally sincere sports drama based on a tragic true story. The plot hits familiar inspirational sports beats — grief, rebuilding, triumph of the human spirit — without much deviation from the genre formula. Acting from Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox is solid but unspectacular, delivering earnest performances within genre conventions. Cinematography is workmanlike and functional, offering little visual distinction beyond standard sports-drama aesthetics. Novelty is low as the film treads well-worn 'team overcomes tragedy' territory with few surprises in structure or execution. The ending lands with appropriate emotional weight, delivering the expected catharsis the genre demands without overstaying its welcome.
