A dweeby, mild-mannered man comes to the aid of a drunk young woman on a subway platform. Little does he know how much trouble he’s in for.
My Sassy Girl is a landmark of Korean romantic comedy that essentially defined the 'sassy girl' archetype in East Asian cinema. The lead performances, particularly Jeon Ji-hyun's electric and unpredictable turn, elevate the material enormously and carry much of the film's charm. Its tone—blending genuine emotional depth with absurdist humor and sadness—was strikingly original for its era and spawned countless imitators across Asia. The plot is episodic and slightly meandering, and while the ending delivers an emotionally satisfying resolution, it leans into coincidence and sentimentality in ways that feel slightly convenient. Cinematography is competent and occasionally lovely but not particularly distinguished. Its singular voice and cultural impact, however, are undeniable.
