When a kind of rabies that transforms people into aggressive creatures spreads across the planet, Manel isolates himself at home with his cat, relying on his wits to survive; but soon they must go out in search of food, by land and by sea, dodging many dangers.
Apocalypse Z follows a largely familiar zombie-apocalypse survival template — isolated protagonist, resource scarcity, escalating danger — with the mild distinguishing touch of a human-cat bond and a Galician coastal setting. The plot is competent but rarely surprises, hitting expected beats of a man-and-pet survival story without meaningful subversion. Acting is serviceable for a mid-tier Spanish horror-drama, grounded if unspectacular. Cinematography captures the Galician landscape adequately but lacks distinctive visual ambition. Novelty is low: despite the cat companion angle, the zombie-apocalypse framework is well-worn and the execution doesn't forge a truly singular identity. The ending feels abrupt and unsatisfying, functioning more as a setup for a sequel than a complete arc, which weakens the overall experience.
