After lying in a coma for a year, Michael Myers awakens and stalks his way back to his small hometown in Illinois, intent on killing his niece, Jamie, who has been confined to a mental institution since his last attempt to slay her.
Halloween 5 is widely regarded as one of the weaker entries in the franchise. The plot retreads familiar ground with little innovation — Myers wakes from a coma and resumes stalking, offering nothing new beyond the psychic link subplot. Acting is generally mediocre across the board, with Donald Pleasence doing his best in an underwritten role. Cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable for a late-80s slasher, competent but uninspired. Novelty scores low as this is a formulaic, by-the-numbers sequel that recycles beats from prior films without a distinctive voice or craft to distinguish it. The ending earns a slight bump for introducing the mysterious Man in Black, which at least teased future mythology even if it raised more questions than it answered.
