The Normal Heart (2014)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

The story of the onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s, taking an unflinching look at the nation's sexual politics as gay activists and their allies in the medical community fight to expose the truth about the burgeoning epidemic to a city and nation in denial.

The Quartile Take

The Normal Heart is a searing adaptation of Larry Kramer's landmark play, elevated by powerhouse performances from Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, and Julia Roberts. The plot is urgent and emotionally devastating, chronicling the early AIDS crisis with raw political fury and personal grief that rarely lets up. The acting is genuinely exceptional across the board, with Ruffalo delivering one of his career-best performances. The cinematography is competent and serviceable but doesn't particularly distinguish itself visually — it serves the story without transcending its TV-movie aesthetic. Novelty is moderate: the subject matter remains vital and the theatrical origins give it a distinct voice, but the prestige-drama framework is familiar, and similar territory has been covered in works like Angels in America. The ending is harrowing and emotionally cathartic, landing with the full weight of everything the film has built.
