A drama about explorer John Smith and the clash between Native Americans and English settlers in the 17th century.
Terrence Malick's meditation on the Pocahontas story is visually ravishing — Emmanuel Lubezki's natural-light cinematography is among the finest ever committed to film, capturing the Virginia wilderness with breathtaking immediacy. Malick's distinctively impressionistic, non-linear approach — whispered voiceovers, fleeting images, nature as emotional counterpoint — makes it unmistakably singular in conception and voice, earning high Novelty. The plot, however, is deliberately elliptical to the point of frustration for many viewers, prioritizing sensation over narrative propulsion. Acting is committed (Q'orianka Kilcher is remarkable) but the fragmented style prevents full character development. The ending is quietly elegiac but may feel attenuated after the film's extended runtime.
