Following a bomb scare in the 1960s that locked the Webbers into their bomb shelter for 35 years, Adam now ventures forth into Los Angeles to obtain food and supplies for his family, and a non-mutant wife for himself.
Blast from the Past has a genuinely charming high-concept premise — a man raised in a 1960s time capsule bunker emerging into 1990s LA — that makes for an enjoyable fish-out-of-water romantic comedy. Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone have likable chemistry, and Christopher Walken is delightfully eccentric as the paranoid patriarch. The plot is lightweight and somewhat predictable once the romance arc kicks in, following rom-com conventions fairly closely. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, typical of late-90s studio comedies. The ending wraps up neatly but without much surprise or emotional punch — pleasant but forgettable. The novelty lies in its unusual setup and the nostalgic culture-clash humor, which gives it a distinctive flavor even if the underlying story is conventional.
