Per her mother's last wish, an 8 year old girl sets out to reunite her father with his college best friend who was in love with him.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a charming and emotionally engaging Bollywood classic that blends romance, friendship, and family in a breezy, melodramatic package. The plot is warm but structurally uneven — the college flashback first half is considerably stronger than the camp-set second half, which feels rushed and contrived. The acting is charismatic from Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who share undeniable chemistry, though characterizations lean heavily on broad archetypes. Cinematography is competent and vibrant in the Bollywood mainstream style without being visually distinctive. The film has a familiar love-triangle-and-reunion structure but Karan Johar's debut feature has enough emotional sincerity and cultural specificity to feel somewhat distinctive within that template. The ending resolves too quickly and conveniently, leaning on sentiment over earned dramatic resolution.
