A group of scientists in San Francisco struggle to stay alive in the aftermath of a plague that is wiping out humanity, while Caesar tries to maintain dominance over his community of intelligent apes.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a solid, competent sequel that expands the post-apocalyptic world established in Rise. The plot draws effective parallels between ape and human political tensions, but follows a fairly predictable escalation-to-conflict arc with few surprises. Acting is serviceable, with Andy Serkis delivering a strong motion-capture performance as Caesar, though human characters are thinly written. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable for a blockbuster of its scale. Novelty is low — it's a well-executed but derivative sequel that recycles themes of distrust, betrayal, and inevitable war from the broader franchise without bringing a truly distinctive voice. The ending resolves conflicts adequately but leaves things on a grim, open-ended note that feels more like a setup for the next film than a satisfying conclusion in its own right.
