Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
A couple celebrates their son’s birthday in the middle of the ocean on their boat. A violent storm hits and it brings up hungry creatures from the depths and they fight for their survival.
Survive (2024) is a fairly standard creature-feature survival thriller set at sea. The plot follows a well-worn template — isolated protagonists, rising threat from below, desperate fight for survival — offering little narrative innovation. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with characters that don't transcend genre archetypes. Cinematography gets a slight boost for its ocean setting, which provides some visual tension and atmosphere even if execution is uneven. Novelty is low; the film recycles familiar creature-from-the-deep conventions without a distinctive voice or fresh angle. The ending follows predictable genre beats without a memorable or subversive payoff. Overall a below-average genre entry that hits familiar marks without distinction.
