Tombstone (1993)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Legendary marshal Wyatt Earp, now a weary gunfighter, joins his brothers Morgan and Virgil to pursue their collective fortune in the thriving mining town of Tombstone. But Earp is forced to don a badge again and get help from his notorious pal Doc Holliday when a gang of renegade brigands and rustlers begins terrorizing the town.

The Quartile Take

Tombstone is elevated almost entirely by its performances, particularly Val Kilmer's iconic turn as Doc Holliday, which is genuinely exceptional and career-defining. The ensemble cast including Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott, and Bill Paxton delivers strong work throughout. The plot follows a well-trodden Western template — the Wyatt Earp/OK Corral story has been told many times — keeping it below average in novelty without offering a fresh angle or subversive take. Cinematography is competent and handsomely shot but unremarkable for the genre. The ending is satisfying in a conventional sense but trails off into a montage epilogue that deflates tension. What makes the film memorable is almost entirely performance-driven rather than structural or visual innovation.
