Oddity (2024)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

After the brutal murder of her twin sister, Darcy goes after those responsible by using haunted items as her tools for revenge.

The Quartile Take

Oddity is a competent Irish horror entry with a genuinely unsettling central conceit — a blind clairvoyant wielding haunted antiques as instruments of revenge — that gives it a distinctive enough premise to stand apart from generic ghost-story fare. The mannequin as a haunted object is effectively creepy and the film milks real dread from it. Acting is solid if unspectacular, with the lead performance carrying most of the weight. Cinematography is atmospheric and makes good use of its rural Irish setting and interior gloom, though it doesn't transcend its modest budget. The plot is engaging in its setup but loses some momentum in the middle act as the revenge mechanics become predictable. The ending is the weakest link — it resolves in a fairly conventional fashion that doesn't fully pay off the unsettling promise of the first two acts, leaving the supernatural rules and emotional stakes somewhat undercooked.
