The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

Quartile rating: 9.5/10 · 1 rating

As armies mass for a final battle that will decide the fate of the world--and powerful, ancient forces of Light and Dark compete to determine the outcome--one member of the Fellowship of the Ring is revealed as the noble heir to the throne of the Kings of Men. Yet, the sole hope for triumph over evil lies with a brave hobbit, Frodo, who, accompanied by his loyal friend Sam and the hideous, wretched Gollum, ventures deep into the very dark heart of Mordor on his seemingly impossible quest to destroy the Ring of Power.

The Quartile Take

The Return of the King is a towering achievement in epic filmmaking. The plot masterfully weaves multiple climactic threads — Frodo and Sam's harrowing journey into Mordor, Aragorn's ascension, and the massive battle of Pelennor Fields — into a cohesive, emotionally devastating conclusion. Acting is uniformly excellent, with Sean Astin and Andy Serkis delivering career-best performances. Cinematography by Andrew Lesnie is genuinely spectacular, from the sweeping New Zealand vistas to the intimate darkness of Shelob's lair. Novelty scores slightly lower — while the execution is peerless, it is the third entry in an established adaptation of beloved source material, and the epic fantasy battle template it perfects was already laid out in the prior two films. The ending, despite its famously extended multiple codas, earns a top score for its emotional resonance and earned catharsis — the tearful farewell at the Grey Havens remains one of cinema's most moving conclusions.
