Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (2012)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

Batman has not been seen for ten years. A new breed of criminal ravages Gotham City, forcing 55-year-old Bruce Wayne back into the cape and cowl. But, does he still have what it takes to fight crime in a new era?

The Quartile Take

A faithful and gripping adaptation of Frank Miller's landmark graphic novel, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 earns high marks for its plot — a dark, politically charged deconstruction of the superhero mythos that remains one of the most compelling Batman stories ever told. The novelty is genuinely high: its dystopian, aged-hero premise and noir-drenched tone were groundbreaking in comics and translate with singular voice to animation. The animation style captures Miller's harsh, blocky aesthetic effectively, though the cinematography is competent rather than exceptional for the medium. Voice acting is serviceable but Peter Weller's detached delivery is an acquired taste. The ending, while dramatically satisfying as a cliffhanger setup for Part 2, is inherently incomplete as a standalone conclusion, limiting its score.
