When intelligence agent Kathryn Woodhouse is suspected of betraying the nation, her husband – also a legendary agent – faces the ultimate test of whether to be loyal to his marriage, or his country.
Black Bag is a sleek, Soderbergh-directed espionage chamber drama that leans heavily on sharp, witty dialogue and a stellar ensemble cast led by Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. The acting is genuinely exceptional — the leads bring cool authority and charged restraint to every scene, elevating what is otherwise a fairly conventional spy-thriller premise. The plot is engaging and well-structured but ultimately predictable in its twists, offering little that hasn't been seen in the genre before. Cinematography is polished and elegant, befitting Soderbergh's style, but not especially distinctive. The ending disappoints by resolving ambiguities too neatly, undercutting the film's tension and moral complexity.
