A wannabe rock star who fronts a Pennsylvania-based tribute band is devastated when his bandmates kick him out of the group he founded. Things begin to look up for Izzy when he is asked to join Steel Dragon, the heavy metal rockers he had been imitating for so long. This film is loosely based on the true story of the band Judas Priest.
Rock Star is a competent but formulaic rise-and-fall rock biopic that hits predictable beats: small-town dreamer gets big break, loses himself in excess, finds redemption. The 'tribute band member joins the real band' premise has some novelty but is squandered on a by-the-numbers narrative. Wahlberg is charming and committed, and Jennifer Aniston provides solid support, lifting the acting above the script's limitations. Cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable, capturing the 80s metal aesthetic adequately without any distinctive visual flair. The ending opts for a sincere if somewhat abrupt pivot toward authenticity that works emotionally even if it feels convenient. Overall a watchable but forgettable entry in the music drama genre.
