The Quartile Take

Because I Said So is a formulaic romantic comedy that leans heavily on the overbearing-mother trope without bringing much freshness to the genre. The plot is predictable and contrived, with Daphne's meddling scheme generating obvious complications that resolve exactly as expected. Diane Keaton commits fully to her role and brings genuine comedic energy, elevating the material somewhat, though the script doesn't give the ensemble much to work with beyond broad archetypes. Visually, the film is competent but unremarkable — standard rom-com aesthetics with no distinctive cinematographic choices. Novelty is low: the meddling-mother-meets-romantic-comedy formula is well-worn, and the film executes it by the numbers without a distinctive voice or fresh angle. The ending is saccharine and telegraphed well in advance, offering no surprises or emotional resonance beyond genre convention.
