Random Hearts (1999)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

After losing their spouses in a plane crash, an internal affairs cop and a congresswoman find each other's keys in each other's loved ones' possessions and discover that the two were having an affair.

The Quartile Take

Random Hearts squanders an intriguing premise—two grieving spouses discovering their partners were having an affair—by delivering a sluggish, tonally uncertain narrative that never fully commits to thriller, romance, or character drama. Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas bring professionalism to their roles but can't elevate underdeveloped characters or spark convincing chemistry. Sydney Pollack's direction keeps things visually competent but unremarkable. The concept had genuine potential for novelty but the execution is formulaic and the pacing leaden. The ending resolves without much emotional payoff, leaving the central relationship feeling unearned.
