American Mary carves out a genuinely distinctive niche in body-horror, blending underground body-modification subculture with a female-driven revenge narrative in a way that feels singular and unflinching. Katharine Isabelle delivers a compelling lead performance that anchors the film's tonal shifts. Cinematography is competent and stylishly cold without being exceptional. The plot is engaging in its first two acts but loses momentum and coherence as it progresses. The ending feels abrupt and undercooked, failing to deliver a satisfying payoff to the dark journey established earlier.
