A chronicle of the life of 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who was reviled for her extravagant political and personal life.
The Duchess is elevated primarily by Keira Knightley's commanding central performance and Ralph Fiennes' chilling portrayal of the cold, controlling Duke, with lush, Oscar-winning costume design and handsome period cinematography giving the film real visual distinction. The plot, however, follows a fairly familiar trajectory for the costume drama genre — a trapped aristocratic woman navigating loveless marriage, political intrigue, and romantic heartbreak — without adding much structural surprise or depth beyond its glossy surface. The ending, in which Georgiana resigns herself to her constrained fate, feels historically honest but dramatically deflating, leaving the film on a note of quiet defeat rather than resonance. Novelty is limited as the film sits comfortably within the well-worn British period drama tradition without reinventing it.
