Ben Crane believes that a severely injured racehorse deserves another chance. He and his daughter Cale adopt the mare and save it from being sacrificed by the owner.
Dreamer is a warm, competently made family sports drama that hits familiar underdog-and-healing beats without much surprise. The father-daughter bond and horse rehabilitation arc are engaging but follow a well-worn template seen in films like Secretariat and Seabiscuit. Acting from Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning is solid and heartfelt, elevating the material. Cinematography is pleasant and functional, capturing Kentucky horse country adequately without striking visual ambition. The ending delivers the expected crowd-pleasing payoff, satisfying but entirely predictable. Novelty is low — the inspired-by-true-story sports comeback formula offers little that distinguishes it from genre peers.
