Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating
Two strangers are drawn together under incredible circumstances. What starts as an unforeseen encounter over a long holiday weekend soon becomes a second chance love story.
Labor Day is a competent but somewhat overwrought romantic drama with a melodramatic premise that stretches credibility. Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin deliver committed performances that elevate the material above its pulpy roots, but the story relies heavily on romantic contrivance — a fugitive convict who happens to be perfect father-figure and romantic lead material. The cinematography is competent and autumnal but unremarkable. The film doesn't bring much that's distinctive to the escaped-convict-romance genre, leaning into familiar emotional beats. The ending is sentimental and somewhat unsatisfying, wrapping things up in a way that feels more wishful than earned.
