Eagle Eye is a high-concept thriller that borrows liberally from predecessors like Enemy of the State and 2001: A Space Odyssey, blending surveillance paranoia with a rogue AI premise but executing neither with particular distinction. The plot is propulsive but riddled with implausibilities and conveniences that strain credulity, and the third-act reveal of ARIA as the antagonist feels telegraphed and undercooked. Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan are competent but limited by thin characterization, while Billy Bob Thornton adds some gruff energy. The cinematography is slick and professional — serviceable blockbuster work with kinetic action sequences — but nothing visually distinctive. The film's core concept of ubiquitous technology as a weapon was not especially fresh in 2008, and the execution leans heavily on formula. The ending resolves matters neatly but without emotional or thematic payoff, wrapping up a convoluted conspiracy in a deeply unsatisfying way.
