After a bad breakup with his girlfriend leaves him heartbroken, Carter Webb moves to Michigan to take care of his ailing grandmother. Once there, he gets mixed up in the lives of the mother and daughters who live across the street.
In the Land of Women is a fairly generic romantic drama that follows well-worn territory: a heartbroken young man finds emotional connection with suburban women dealing with illness and infidelity. The plot offers little surprise and leans heavily on familiar indie-drama tropes of the mid-2000s. The acting is serviceable, with Adam Brody doing his usual likable everyman routine and Meg Ryan bringing some warmth, but nothing transcendent. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable, typical of low-budget character dramas of the era. The film adds little that feels distinctive or new to the coming-of-age/romantic drama genre. The ending resolves things in a predictable, emotionally safe way that fails to leave a lasting impression.
