College student Lucy and her friends spend their vacation at her family's home in Hawaii, which includes her pet chimpanzee, Ben. However, when Ben contracts rabies after being bitten by a rabid animal, the group must fight for their lives in order to avoid the now-violent chimp.
Primate works a familiar teen horror template — isolated group, escalating animal threat, survival scramble — but the Hawaiian setting and rabid chimpanzee premise give it a reasonably distinctive hook that elevates it above pure formula. The plot is serviceable but thin, leaning on genre conventions without much subversion. Acting is mid-tier as expected for the subgenre. Cinematography benefits from the lush Hawaii backdrop, giving it a bit more visual polish than the average creature feature. The ending resolves competently but without real surprise or emotional payoff, landing squarely in by-the-numbers territory.
