Carrie (2013)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

An awkward, telekinetic teenage girl is the object of relentless bullying at school and an oppressively religious mother at home.

The Quartile Take

This 2013 remake of Brian De Palma's 1976 classic adds little new to Stephen King's story. The plot faithfully follows the original — Carrie's torment and bloody prom revenge — but without meaningful reinvention. Acting is serviceable, with Chloë Grace Moretz doing competent work though lacking Sissy Spacek's haunting vulnerability, and Julianne Moore brings some menace as the mother. Cinematography is slick but generic, missing the operatic visual flair of the original. Novelty is the clear weak point — this is a straightforward, largely uninspired remake that offers almost nothing the 1976 film didn't do better. The ending delivers the expected prom carnage adequately but again can't surpass its predecessor.
