A sailor prone to violent outbursts is sent to a naval psychiatrist for help. Refusing at first to open up, the young man eventually breaks down and reveals a horrific childhood. Through the guidance of his doctor, he confronts his painful past and begins a quest to find the family he never knew.
Antwone Fisher is a competent, earnest biographical drama anchored by genuine emotional weight from its true story origins. Denzel Washington (directing debut) and Derek Luke deliver solid performances, with Luke particularly affecting in the lead role. The plot follows a fairly familiar redemption-through-therapy arc that doesn't stray far from genre conventions, and the cinematography is functional but unremarkable. The ending, while emotionally satisfying with the family reunion sequence, leans heavily on sentimentality. Novelty is limited as the film treads well-worn biographical drama territory, though the specific Black American naval setting adds modest distinction.
