An adolescent girl, living with her mother and her grandmother, will have her first sexual experiences in a heavy and excessive way.
Melissa P. is an Italian coming-of-age drama based on a semi-autobiographical novel that generated controversy for its explicit depiction of teenage sexuality. The plot follows a fairly familiar template of adolescent self-discovery gone to dark extremes, but lacks the narrative depth or psychological nuance to elevate it beyond its provocative surface. Acting is uneven, with the lead delivering a committed performance that is undermined by thin characterization in the script. Cinematography has some warmth and Mediterranean atmosphere, slightly above average for the genre. Novelty is limited — while the subject matter is bold, the execution is largely formulaic, and similar territory has been covered more effectively elsewhere. The ending offers little resolution or meaningful reflection, leaving the film feeling incomplete and unsatisfying.
