Star Trek (2009)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James Kirk, is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock, a Vulcan, was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before. The human adventure has begun again.

The Quartile Take

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot is a confident, energetic reimagining of a beloved franchise. The cast is a genuine highlight — Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and others nail their iconic roles with fresh energy while honoring the originals, earning a strong Acting score. The plot is serviceable blockbuster fare — the alternate timeline conceit is clever enough to justify its existence, but Nero as a villain is underdeveloped and the story leans heavily on familiar Trek beats. Cinematography is solid but unremarkable modern blockbuster work with aggressive lens flare as a stylistic signature. Novelty sits in the middle: rebooting a legacy franchise with an alternate timeline is a smart structural move but not a radical reinvention, and the film follows a fairly conventional hero's-journey template. The ending resolves satisfyingly and sets up the new universe well, but doesn't land with particular emotional weight beyond nostalgia. A very entertaining, crowd-pleasing film that successfully relaunched the franchise without pushing any single dimension to exceptional heights.
