Drumline (2002)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 2 ratings

A talented street drummer from Harlem enrolls in a Southern university, expecting to lead its marching band's drumline to victory. He initially flounders in his new world, before realizing that it takes more than talent to reach the top.

The Quartile Take

Drumline is an energetic, crowd-pleasing drama built around the competitive HBCU marching band world — a genuinely underrepresented setting that gives it some novelty. The plot follows a familiar 'talent meets humility' arc with predictable beats but is executed with enough enthusiasm and heart to stay engaging. Nick Cannon anchors the film with charisma even if the acting is broadly serviceable rather than exceptional. Cinematography is functional TV-movie level, with the band performance sequences providing some visual flair but nothing cinematically distinctive. The ending delivers satisfying resolution consistent with genre expectations. A solid, fun film that does what it sets out to do without transcending its formula.
