Sleepaway Camp is a mid-tier slasher in most respects — the acting is amateurish, the cinematography workmanlike — but it earns its cult status almost entirely on the strength of its utterly shocking, genuinely iconic ending, one of the most memorable final reveals in horror history. The film's Novelty score reflects how singular that ending makes the whole experience; no other slasher of its era lands quite the same gut-punch. The plot is serviceable genre fare with some interesting psychological threads around Angela, elevating it slightly above pure formula.
