Lovestruck Dustin is dating Alexis, his ideal girlfriend, but when she dumps him for coming on too strong, Dustin takes drastic measures to win her back. He asks his best friend Tank to take her on the worst rebound date imaginable - his side job - so that she will come running back to him, and Tank reluctantly agrees. However, Alexis is more than a match for Tank's shock tactics and he begins to really fall for her, leaving him torn between loyalty to Dustin and his growing attraction toward Alexis.
My Best Friend's Girl is a formulaic rom-com that hits every expected beat without distinction. The premise—hiring a deliberately bad date to push an ex back to her original boyfriend—has a mildly clever hook but executes it predictably. Dane Cook's crude persona and Jason Biggs's lovable loser are well-worn archetypes, and the performances are serviceable but unremarkable. The cinematography is flat and functional, typical of mid-budget studio comedies of the era. The film offers little novelty beyond its raunchy tone, which itself was fairly commonplace in late-2000s comedies. The ending resolves exactly as telegraphed from the opening act, with no real surprises or emotional payoff. A thoroughly average entry in the genre that earns consistent 2s across the board.
