A circus' beautiful trapeze artist agrees to marry the leader of side-show performers, but his deformed friends discover she is only marrying him for his inheritance.
Freaks is one of the most singular films in Hollywood history — a genuinely radical Pre-Code production that cast real sideshow performers and treated them with more dignity than the supposed 'normals,' inverting the horror genre's usual moral compass. Its Novelty is undeniable and enduring; nothing quite like it existed before or has been replicated since. The Ending — the rain-soaked revenge sequence culminating in the infamous transformation — is viscerally disturbing and iconically earned, landing well above average. Plot and Acting are competent but uneven; the pacing is loose and some performances are stiff by modern standards. Cinematography is functional and atmospheric in places but not especially distinguished. The film's reputation rests on its conception and audacity rather than technical polish across the board.
